Having an effective and efficient logistics plan, including warehousing when applicable, is vital to small business success the entire year. For some businesses, having a strong logistics plan is especially important during the holiday season.

Last week we talked about how the holidays affect the warehousing and logistics industries. Today, let’s look at how warehousing and logistics can improve small business during the holiday season (and into the new year).

More expedient service

Having a short, well-established supply chain makes it easier for small businesses to stay nimble. Last minute changes and last minute rushes from customers that always happen around the holidays are less of a problem if a logistics plan is in place.

A major area where this is true is in returns. We talked about last week how e-commerce and a company’s footprint stores must often work together when returns are involved. Having a clear return process and plan for getting returned items back into being available for sale will help the company’s bottom line. And, it will increase customer loyalty.

Another piece to the logistics plan is having effective means for customers to order or request their merchandise. If your website is not able to handle the traffic for high volume periods, you will lose customers.

Better inventory control

Customers are busy. They don’t have time to keep coming back to see if a promised item is back in stock. And if they order online, they don’t want to get that message that says the item is being back ordered.

Small businesses with enough product to meet the needs immediately (read: in time for gift giving) will set themselves above the competition.

Offer expanded or better services

Some businesses don’t need to offer delivery services on a regular basis. During  the holidays, however, this can be an added service that differentiates a small business from the competition. By hiring an experienced courier service, a small business can offer delivery options and continue focusing on their regular business management.

Another holiday delivery need is in the form of client gifts. Do you have clients whom you want to receive a gift but want the delivery to be more personal than through the mail? Don’t waste employee time making those deliveries. A professional courier company can create a route plan that gets all your client gifts delivered without interrupting your work day.

On Time Logistics offers high quality, dependable warehousing and logistics solutions. We can make your holiday season merry and bright.
