Transportation-related news coming out of Northwest Arkansas in recent weeks shows an excellent trend: People needing to get from point A to point B have better options and they are utilizing those options.
Both the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA) and Ozark Regional Transport (ORT) reported record high ridership numbers for 2014. That tells us that the area is growing, but also that area residents are finding reliable, convenient ways of getting to their destination.
When it comes to XNA and ORT, these are two of Northwest Arkansas’ most popular and well-established transportation systems. The NWA Council recently reported that XNA exceeded 600,000 annual passengers last year for the first time since opening.

The airport’s 640,537 outbound passengers last year relied on American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, U.S. Airways and Allegiant Air to take them to more than a dozen nonstop destinations.
The airport’s previous best year was 2007 when 598,886 passengers boarded flights from XNA. In 2013, there were 581,487 passengers, according to a press release.
Another major transportation organization in NWA is Ozark Regional Transit. Officials there attribute major commitments by the largest NWA cities and Washington County for making it possible to provide rides to more people than ever before.

The 320,976 trips by riders last year were the most in the public transportation system’s history. Led by Fayetteville’s $300,000 contributions, Ozark Regional Transit received major financial commitments last year from Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville and Washington County, according to a press release.
The bus system provided 295,045 trips in 2013.
