Did you know that back injury due to improper lifting is one of the top reasons for missed work? Whether the incident happens at home or work, painful back strains can be prevented with a few simple lifting safety techniques.

A few weeks ago, we blogged about how, as logistics providers, we have also become well-versed in several safety areas. One safety area where we’ve become experts is safe lifting.

Here are some general rules our couriers follow that will also be helpful to you:

  • Avoid lifting manually when possible-Use aids such as dollies, hand trucks or for really large items, a forklift.
  • Plan and prepare before you lift-Make sure your path that you must carry the item across is flat and clear. Also make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes with nonskid soles, and perhaps gloves that provide a better grip.
  • Lift properly with your legs, not your back-stand close to the load with your feet planted firmly shoulder-width apart. Bend at the hips and knees so you can squat close to the load but keep your back straight (don’t bend over). Grip the item with your hands (not just your fingers). Stand slowly using your legs instead of bending your back for leverage.
  • Avoid back injury while carrying-Carry the load at your waist and walk slowly, making small steps. Move your feet to change direction so that your entire body moves instead of twisting your back to change direction.
  • Unload items carefully-Lower the load slowly, using your knees instead of your back. Place the load on the edge of the surface then slide it back (instead of trying to bend and place it fully inside a vehicle or shelf).
  • Get help-Many loads should not be carried by one person. Depending on the weight or shape, you should get help from one or more people. If the load is large (or you have numerous items that must be transported), consider calling a courier service like On Time Logistics to transport the item for you.
